During World War Two the library did not shut for a single day

During World War Two the library did not shut for a single day. Its staff and the Director of the library M.Tischkevich, sharing the fate of all Leningraders during the Blockade, saved its unique collections in a feat of courage and great morality.

One of the most valuable acquisitions in the post-war era was the archive of M.Fokine, ballet dancer and master. It was presented to the library by his son. Fokine's book, Against the Stream (published in 1962) was compiled using these materials.

M.Fokine (1880-1942)
